It was inaugurated in 2001 and hosts the Departments of Law and the Department of Political and International Sciences of the University of Siena. The University of Siena, founded in 1240, is one of the oldest universities in Italy, with a great knowledge-related tradition, as well a strong commitment to both research and innovation It has today 15 departments, all integrated into the urban fabric.
The Mattioli Complex includes a big auditorium for plenary talks and a number of other big rooms for parallel sessions, indoor spaces for poster sessions and outdoor spaces for catering (weather permitting). High speed internet access is available in all the meeting rooms and common areas.
HOW TO REACH SIENA
Siena is located in the heart of Tuscany amid a wide hilly landscape. Built on three steep hills and encircled by ancient walls, the medieval city of Siena welcomes its visitors with a Latin motto at the Porta Camollia entrance to the centre “Cor Magis Tibi Saena Pandit” (Siena opens its heart to you wider than this gate).
You will find below some information on how to reach Siena using various kind of transport.
BY PLANE
Airport “Amerigo Vespucci” (FLR) – Firenze (68 km) –tramway T2 connects Florence airport to the central train station Santa Maria Novella. Buses for Siena leave from “autostazione”, located in Via Santa Caterina da Siena (right in front of the train station).
Airport “Galileo Galilei” (PSA) – Pisa (150 km) – From Pisa airport you can catch the PisaMover shuttle bus to the main Pisa train station. It leaves every 10 minutes from the airport and the trip takes 8 minutes.
Airport “Leonardo da Vinci” (Fiumicino, FCO) – Roma (250 km) – Both buses and trains to Siena leave from Roma Tiburtina. To travel from the Rome airport to Roma Tiburtina, you will also have to take a train – the platform is inside the airport.
BY TRAIN
Siena is connected to Chiusi railway station (for Rome) and Empoli (for Florence and Pisa). See the Italian Railways website for rates, routes and timetables. The railway station is about 2 km from the town centre and it can easily be reached by bus in a few minutes.
